'A Historic Woodland 5 mile Adventure'; A castle mound, a church & great views
Embark on a 5.5-mile circular journey from the historic town of Hay-on-Wye, crossing into England to explore the charming village of Cusop. Visit St. Mary's Church, home to a Norman font, a beautiful Millennium stained glass window, and the resting place of Richard Booth, the self-proclaimed 'King of Hay'. The church welcomes visitors, offering refreshments for a donation. Continue uphill through picturesque farmland, perhaps glimpsing Pen y Fan mountain in the distance on a good day as you reach the top, crossing streams and stiles, to reach Mousecastle Wood, managed by the Woodland Trust. Here, discover the remnants of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle, once a strategic fortification against Welsh advances. Enjoy potential sightings of local wildlife, including deer and woodpeckers, as you descend through the woodland. Emerge to panoramic views of Hay-on-Wye, the Wye Valley. A serene field offers an ideal picnic spot before you proceed downhill via tranquil lanes and fields, crossing a charming stone-slab bridge over a stream. The route then meanders alongside the River Wye, guiding you back into town. This moderately challenging walk features some muddy sections, stiles, and stream crossings. Suitable for walkers with good footwear and an average ability, it may not be ideal for children under seven. The walk concludes in the heart of Hay-on-Wye, where you can explore quaint streets, independent bookshops, cozy cafes, and the newly restored Hay Castle.
